Hula Skirts
The modern image of the Hawaiian girl wearing a Hula Skirt is mostly a creation of popular culture. The hula dance was originally performed by both men and women, with men having the dominant role as they were the ones who peformed the hula dance at temple worship services. The male hula dancers did not wear a Hula Skirt. One of the primary reasons for the dance was pantomiming action in the belief that they might be able to influence future events such as hunting or fertility.
After missionaries nearly extinguished the hula dance in the 19th century, hollywood revived the hula dance, recasting it into the modern image of the seductive Hawaiian girl wearing the grass Hula Skirt. The 1937 Bing Crosby film 'Waikiki Wedding' portrayed the female hula dancer swaying her hips with a grass Hula Skirt.
Despite the revisions, the cultural heritage of the hula dance continues today through music such as 'The Hukilau Song' which depicts the hula dancer performing a historical theme - moving her hands as if casting out a fishing net and then pulling in the fishing net. In fact, the original hula dance was not merely for entertainment at a Luau Party with a grass Hula Skirt. It was a way to teach aspects of daily life and convey stories through the motions of the hula dance. Today, there is a resurgence in male Hawaiian hula dancers interested in preserving traditional Hawaiian culture.
So when you open your Hula Skirt at your Luau Party, share the history with your guests and pass on the Hawaiian spirit of Aloha - welcome, love and generosity.
